The 2023 Workshop on Causal and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (CXAI) will be held in Shanghai, China on 1 December 2023, as a part of the 23rd IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM 2023).
Over the last decade, machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been increasingly adopted in various domains, such as healthcare, finance, and transportation. However, the lack of transparency and interpretability in AI/ML models has resulted in a growing demand to make them more understandable to humans. This is crucial for ensuring effective collaboration between humans and AI systems, and for ensuring regulatory compliance. Therefore, the upcoming CXAI workshop aims to address these challenges by providing a platform for AI/ML researchers and practitioners from various countries to share their recent research outcomes and experiences in causal inference/discovery and interpretable/explainable AI. The workshop will take place on 4 Dec 2023 and will focus on improving transparency and interpretability in AI/ML models for real-world applications.
Announcements
8 Jan 2024: CFP: a Special Issue on Causal and Explainable AI. Submission deadline: 30 Apr 2024. See details here.
30 Nov 2023: See final workshop programme at Programme. All presenters and registered attendees who are going to attend virtually should have already received ZOOM details for the workshop. If not, please contact us ASAP.

13 Oct 2023: Keynote speaker. Prof. Tim Miller (University of Queensland, Australia) will give a keynote presentation on "Explainable AI is dead! Long live Explainable AI!" at the workshop.
12 Oct 2023: Author registration. ICDM does not differentiate between main conference and workshop papers in terms of registration. The authors can opt for online attendance, and the registration remains the same rate as on-site attendance.
12 Oct 2023: Workshop in hybrid mode. The workshop will run in a hybrid mode. Authors and audience are recommended to attend in person if possible. Online Attendance will be facilitated for delegates who may face travel restrictions or have concerns about in-person attendance.
6 Oct 2023: Camera-ready submission and author registration. Authors of accepted papers should follow the guidelines at the "Instructions for Authors" page to submit their camera-ready versions and register for the ICDM conference by 15 Oct 2023.
6 Oct 2023: Paper notifications. Notifications of acceptance/rejection have been sent out. Please contact us ASAP if you haven't received a notification for your submission. A list of accepted papers can be found at the "Accepted Papers" page.
18 Sept 2023: Reviewing started. All PC members should have received their reviewing assignment by email. Please access the papers at this link. All review reports are due on 1 Oct.
16 Sept 2023: Paper bidding started. All PC members are expected to bid papers by end of 17 Sept. The reviewing will start on 18 Sept and end on 1 Oct.
16 Sept 2023: Paper submission closed. We have received 26 submissions in total, incl. 20 direct submissions to the workshop and 6 papers forwarded from the ICDM main conference.
1 Sept 2023: Online Attendance Option - In light of potential hesitancy for international traveling, we are considering providing an online attendance option for the ICDM workshops. This would cater to those who may face travel restrictions or have concerns about in-person attendance.
27 Aug 2023: Deadlines extended: abstract registration has been extended to 8 Sept 2023 and paper submission to 15 Sept 2023.
4 July 2023: Special Issue: Authors of accepted papers will be invited to submit extended versions for possible inclusion in a Special Issue on Causal and Explainable Artificial Intelligence in the Applied Sciences journal.
15 May 2023: The online paper submission system is open.
18 Mar 2023: The CXAI workshop proposal has been accepted by ICDM 2023.
